On June 10, 2025, NHEE joined organizations from across the state to celebrate New Hampshire’s first-ever Outdoor Industry Day—an exciting milestone that recognizes the economic and cultural impact of our outdoor economy and the deep connection between people and nature.

It was inspiring to hear Governor Ayotte read the official Outdoor Industry Proclamation, affirming the importance of New Hampshire’s natural resources not only as an economic engine but as a foundation for our mental, physical, and community wellbeing.
“Whereas, New Hampshire’s outdoor industry is a powerful driver of the state’s economy, contributing over four billion dollars annually to the state’s GDP… and whereas, the continued success of New Hampshire’s outdoor economy is made possible through collaboration among public agencies, nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and local leaders who work together to expand outdoor access, strengthen recreational infrastructure, and promote environmental stewardship…”

Representing Environmental Education
Three NHEE leaders—Mike Smith (Program Manager at NH Agriculture in the Classroom), Sheryl Horton (Director of Education at NH Audubon), and Leigh Ann Reynolds (NHEE Administrator)—were proud to represent environmental education at the event. They connected with outdoor-focused organizations like Minus33, NEMO Equipment, REI, One Earth, and our friendly tent neighbors from Ames Farm Inn.
Despite the rainy weather, the day saw steady foot traffic. Our team shared NHEE’s mission to inspire connection to the natural world by supporting high-quality environmental education and advancing environmental literacy. We also promoted the NHEE’d to Get Outside Grant Program, which funds hands-on, outdoor learning experiences for New Hampshire K–12 schools and 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
Whether it’s a day exploring a state park, a winter ecology lesson on school grounds, or an art-in-nature workshop, these grants help get students outside, learning in and through the environment.
We even hosted a hands-on upcycling activity, where teens transformed old t-shirts into custom tote bags—showing that with a little creativity, we can reduce waste and keep useful materials out of landfills.
Granite Outdoor Alliance: Strengthening NH’s Outdoor Economy
This milestone event was made possible by the Granite Outdoor Alliance, a coalition of businesses, nonprofits, and public agencies working to grow and sustain New Hampshire’s outdoor recreation economy. Their mission is to elevate the state’s outdoor industry as a driver of workforce development, tourism, and quality of life—while advocating for equitable access to outdoor spaces and experiences.
NHEE is a proud member of the Granite Outdoor Alliance, and we’re thrilled to support efforts that connect outdoor recreation with education, health, and economic resilience.

Workforce Toolkit Highlight
New Hampshire’s natural beauty and extensive recreational assets are more than a source of pride—they’re a strategic advantage for businesses. As the competition for skilled workers grows, companies are encouraged to leverage the state’s outdoor lifestyle to attract and retain talent.
To support this effort, Janel Lawton, Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry Development, introduced the New Hampshire Workforce Toolkit for the Outdoor Lifestyle. This resource helps employers integrate outdoor access and culture into their recruitment strategies—positioning the Granite State as a great place to work and live.
