Spearheading New Hampshire’s Environmental Literacy Plan and advocating for its integration into state education.
Awarding $1,000+ grants annually through NHEE’d To Get Outside (launched in 2018).
Launching a 3-year strategic plan and hiring our first staff member to expand capacity.

Practical Benefits:
Network with NH’s top environmental professionals.
Showcase your organization through collaborative projects.
Gain leadership experience (hello, resume boost!).
Philosophical Impact:
Empower people of all ages to connect with nature.
Shape policies and programs that improve quality of life for Granite Staters.
Leave a legacy in the EE community.
Joining the Board and What We Ask of You:
Attend 2-hour monthly meetings (Oct–June) via Zoom, with quarterly in-person gatherings.
Join a 1-day retreat each August to strategize for the year ahead.
Contribute ~2 hours/month to projects like grant reviews, conference planning, or fundraising.
Serve a 2-year term (up to 3 terms) and maintain a $30 NHEE membership.
Flexibility is key! Meeting times adapt to members’ schedules, and workloads ebb/flow with project seasons.

Action teams are a wonderful way to get involved without the long term commitment of being a board member. They are an opportunity to network, build community, and contribute to a cause.

R. Laurence Davis (Larry)
New England EE Representative
Larry Davis
Larry (’20, Vice-President, New England Affiliates Representative) received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Earth Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis and his PhD in Geological Sciences from the University of Rochester. Growing up, his family was active in the outdoors. But it was the experience, at age 5, of finding a beryl crystal at an old mine in Maine that led him, eventually, to geology. In 1970, he became the Head of Nature Programs at Camp Pemigewassett (“Pemi”) in Wentworth, NH, stepping into the huge shoes of his predecessor who retired after his 42nd year. Last summer (2019) he completed his 50th year in that position. While he has stepped down from running the program at Pemi, he will remain active as a teacher. He is also Professor Emeritus of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New Haven where he was part of an interdisciplinary program offering B.S. and M.S. degrees in Environmental Sciences. In 2018, the New England Environmental Alliance presented him with their Non-formal Educator Award. He is retired from university teaching and lives in Concord and Wentworth. He enjoys traveling, photography, “collecting” waterfalls, and making music (he is a flautist). He also continues his academic research in Karst Hydrology (groundwater in cavernous areas) at the Gerace Research Centre on San Salvador Island, Bahamas.

Sheryl Horton

She returned to school to pursue a Masters in Education with a certification in Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Instruction from Adams State University in Colorado after noticing how little science was being taught in schools. After spending a year in an urban classroom, she dedicated her educational career to getting students of all ages outside the four traditional walls of a building in order to spark curiosity in science and nature, preserving the environment for the future.
She spent time working with Colorado Parks and Wildlife on the Schools and Outdoor Learning Environments statewide project and then worked educating youth about water quality for the largest water utility in Colorado. In Northwest Colorado she ran the School Programs for Yampatika, an environmental non-profit dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship through education. She is both a Project Learning Tree and Project Wet Facilitator and has served on multiple committees and boards for science and environmental education in Colorado. In 2023, she was awarded the Environmental Educator of the Year award by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education.
She relocated to NH to serve as the Director of Education at NH Audubon, where she oversaw the organization’s statewide public, school, animal, and camp programming. Sheryl enjoys photography, hiking, backpacking, snowboarding, snowshoeing, kayaking, board games, dancing, travelling, and hanging out with her husband and four cats.
