
Congratulations to Jeannie Kornfeld!
We are honored to celebrate Jeannie Kornfeld as the recipient of the 2025 NHEE Legacy Award! With 28 years of dedication to environmental education at Hanover High School, Jeannie has made a profound impact on her students and the community. Whether teaching Earth Systems and Ecological Design, Chemistry, or her March Intensive courses, Jeannie has inspired countless students to connect with the natural world and take action for a sustainable future.
Jeannie’s work extends far beyond the classroom. As the leader of the Environmental Club, she has spearheaded initiatives like the development of the nation’s first student-drafted Climate Action Plan, school-wide composting and recycling programs, and Earth Day celebrations involving hundreds of students. Her tireless work has created lasting change, and her innovative approach encourages students to think critically and creatively about real-world environmental challenges.
In addition to her classroom and club work, Jeannie has led outdoor courses during March Intensive, including trips to Costa Rica, the Florida Everglades, and local ecosystems. Her ability to integrate hands-on, outdoor learning into her teaching has inspired students to explore and appreciate the world around them in meaningful ways.
Jeannie’s commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion is evident in her personalized support for all students, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to engage with environmental education. Her inclusive approach has shaped the futures of many students, inspiring them to pursue careers in environmental science and activism.
As one student, Mackenzie Liu, HHS Class of 2023, shared: “Ms. Kornfeld’s excitement about all these topics made all students excited for class every day… She made me realize how important environmental science is for the future of the planet.”
As she retires, Jeannie leaves behind a legacy of passionate environmental advocacy, innovative teaching, and a lasting impact on both her students and the community.
